Did you know Memorial Day was originally referred to as Decoration Day?
The holiday’s interesting past has led us to a triumphant present, take a look:
1. It’s always celebrated on the last Monday of May thanks to the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. This ensured federal employees would receive a three-day weekend in its observation.
2. Though it was instated when the Civil War ended, it wasn’t until 1971 that it became an official federal holiday.
3. A national moment of remembrance takes place every Memorial Day at 3:00 PM.
4. While the original birthplace remains uncertain, in 1966 the government granted the honor to Waterloo, NY.
5. Common practices on this day are celebratory parades and visits to the fallen soldiers’ places of eternal rest with flowers and the like.
6. Initially, Decoration Day specifically honored those who lost their lives in the Civil War. However, WWI was the reason we now commemorate those who’ve passed in any war.
To the troops: Thank you. We support you, we salute you.
